A new visualization tool shows Retail tops the list of La Crosse County businesses by industry listing provided by the U.S. Census. The U.S. government agency tracks companies using a North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Retail accounts for 423 of La Crosse County’s 3,092 establishments, or 14% of all companies.

Other Top La Crosse County Industries

Accommodation and Food Services follows as La Crosse County’s second largest industry. This is quickly followed by Other Services at 333.

The ranking continues with:

  • Healthcare and Social Assistance: 327
  • Construction: 276
  • Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services: 238
  • Finance and Insurance: 234
  • Real Estate and Rental and Leasing: 156
  • Manufacturing: 151
  • Wholesale Trade: 135
  • Administrative and Support and Waste Management: 131
  • Transportation and Warehousing: 102
  • Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation: 78
  • Information: 60
  • Management of Companies and Enterprises: 48
  • Educational Services: 41

The U.S. Census reports La Crosse County just over 3,000 businesses make up just 2% of all Wisconsin businesses, which total 141,326. Retail is also the largest industry statewide, followed by Health Care and Social Assistance.
